Best Free NetStumbler Alternative

A few years back I started dealing with wireless network installations in homes and business. I was relatively new to the technology and one of the tools I found that helped me greatly was NetStumbler. NetStumbler scans for wireless access points and gives you a pretty graph of signal strength so you can move the access points around and test antennas to get the best reception. It was also useful for testing the range of a particular device. Continue reading “Best Free NetStumbler Alternative”

Dropbox: How Did We Live Without It?

Dropbox is possibly one of the single most useful web services (besides GMail) that I have ever used. For those of you who don’t know what Dropbox is, it basically allows you to synchronise files and folders between multiple computers across any internet connection. If you install Dropbox onto 4 computers for example then any files or folders you put into the ‘Dropbox’ on one of the computers will appear in the ‘Dropbox’ of the other 3 (provided they are connected to the internet of course). Article first published as What Is An ISO File And How Do I Use Them? on Technorati.

Wikipedia defines an ISO file as:

An ISO image is an archive file (also known as a disc image) of an optical disc in a format defined by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). This format is supported by many software vendors. ISO image files typically have a file extension of .iso.

To expand on that definition further, an .iso image is much like a .zip file. You can think of it as a container that holds all the files and folders contained on a CD or DVD but unlike a .zip file an ISO is not compressed. ISO files are useful for keeping backups of CD’s and DVD’s and for storing the contents of CD’s or DVD’s on portable hard-drives or uploading and downloading them on the internet.
