Why Did Pirates Wear Eye Patches?
Here is some completely useless information that is totally unrelated to any topics that are supposed to be covered on this blog, but it’s Friday and it’s my website so I’ll write what I want! See?
Right up until now I always thought that the stereotypical eye patch that pirates wore was just to cover up some nasty battle scar or serious eye infection until I was reading on ‘Life hacks‘ on funlol.com. It has been speculated that sailors (not just pirates) wore eye patches to keep one eye adjusted to darkness. This way the sailor could go below deck and swap the eye patch from one eye to the other in order to retain his night vision when moving below deck.
Wikipedia supports this speculation but also states that it is not supported by any historical records.
